Böjt Winery

Böjt Winery

Eger Region

László and Éva Böjt received a small vineyard plot as compensation after the fall of Communism, using it to found this winery in 1993. Located in the village of Ostoros, four kilometers from the city of Eger in northeastern Hungary, this is a relatively cool climate, and partially volcanic, wine region. Since 2016 Gergő and Boglárka, their son and daughter, have taken the lead and have been running the winery, producing outstanding wines which are great representations of the Eger terroir. The much travelled and internationally experienced Gergő makes the wine, and Boglárka sells it.

Egri Csillag Superior, 2020

Egri Csillag is essentially the white equivalent of the Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) blend. This very popular dry white is a blend of Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Sauvignon Blanc, Leányka and Muscat Ottonel, with no one grape dominating and the result being greater than the sum of the parts. Egri Csillag must be composed of at least 50 percent of the Carpathian basin grape varieties, while local Hungarian aromatic varieties are limited to a maximum of 30 percent. This Egri Csillag is from the so-called ‘Superior’ category, which means that it has had a bit of oak aging, yet retains its freshness, crispiness, and fruitiness. Grapes for this wine come from the amusingly-named Kutyahegy (Dog Hill). It has vibrant green apple, lemon, pear, peach, green pepper, fresh cut grass aromas and flavors, with a zesty and citrusy palate. It is light, fruity, and very refreshing with great drinkability. Ideal by itself but also good with salads, pasta and poultry dishes. The family-owned winery is run by the brother and sister team of Gergő and Boglárka, and is located in the relatively cool climate Eger wine region in the northeast of Hungary. The much travelled and internationally experienced Gergő makes the wine, and Boglárka sells it.

Egri Bikavér, 2017

Built on a backbone of Kékfrankos (Blaufrankisch), which contributes more than 50 percent to the blend, it also contains Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Blauburger and Zweigelt—the latter two both crossings involving Kékfrankos as one of the parents. The varieties were vinified separately and aged in 25 different barrels coming from three cooperages, with the barrels toasted to varying levels. Lively ruby color, aromas of vanilla, violets, ripe red and black fruit, with a touch of smokiness. It has great drinkability on the medium-bodied palate with restrained tannins and lively acidity. It is a great example of Bikavér in the Classic category from Eger. The oak is expertly integrated and subtly adds complexity to the wine without drowning out the fruit. A very versatile food wine. Bikavér was often known earlier by its English translation of Bull’s Blood, but the young generation are distancing themselves from this cheap plonk of the past. The family-owned Böjt winery is run by the brother and sister team of Gergő and Boglárka, and is located in Ostoros, four kilometers from the city of Eger, in the relatively cool climate Eger wine region in the northeast of Hungary.
