Zöldveltelini (Grüner Veltliner) – Hernyák Birtok

Zöldveltelini is the Hungarian name of Grüner Veltliner, which the neighboring Austrians have gained a reputation for being masterful with. However, in Hungary the potential of this wine hasn’t really been explored yet, and it’s still rare to find a high-quality Hungarian Zöldveltelini. That is why we are so excited about this Hernyák Zöldveltelini! Zöldveltelini has long been one of their signature wines, reflecting the region and the family’s distinctive style of winemaking. The grapes are from the vineyard adjacent to the winery, a small plot located in the heart of Etyek’s beautiful Öreghegy (“old hill”). This is where the Hernyák family settled 30  years ago when they left Yugoslavia to start a new life in Hungary, steadily building their gorgeous estate by hand. 2022 was an optimal year for this wine, allowing for an early-October harvest. Following a gentle pressing and one night of settling, the juice was transferred to second- and third-use oak barrels where the wine fermented and aged for five months before bottling. Zöldveltelini is Tomi Hernyák’s favorite grape, and this one has a richer body and a milder acidity in comparison to the Austrian style. The oak influence is subtle, and there are characteristics of grassiness, bell pepper, fres…

style profile

Etyek is the closest wine region to Budapest. Since it is located less than an hour’s drive west of the Buda hills, and has many festivals and events throughout the year, it is also among Hungary’s most visited wine regions. Etyek is a small region, with around 1,400 hectares of vineyards. It has protected designation of origin (PDO) status.

Historically, Etyek was known for producing sparkling wines. Hungary’s first (and largest) sparkling wine producer, Törley, started producing sparkling wines from grapes grown in the region in 1882. Since then, the area has continued to focus on this style. Etyek’s limestone soil and overall colder climate make it, arguably, Hungary’s best region to grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. These are the most important types of wine produced in the area, both as still wines and sparkling wines. Even the Sauvignon Blanc is used to produce Asti-like sparklers.

Etyek’s best features were not always considered a strength. During the time where full-bodied red wines were the most popular style, the southern-Hungarian red wine producers made fun of Etyek’s producers for not being able to produce this popular style and for only being capable of producing ‘base-wine’ for sparklers. Ironically, elegance and bubbles are once again very popular, and now even the southern-Hungarian producers are trying to make bubbly wines. Etyek is living a renaissance. From Etyek’s wines you can expect fresh acidity, chalky minerality (due to the limestone soil), restrained fruit, and an overall cold-climate-wine-feeling. Traditional method sparkling wines are especially worth seeking out, as well as spicy Pinot Noirs and aromatic whites.

The Hernyáks are an extraordinary family in the Etyek wine region. They are an ethnically-Hungarian family, originally from the Vojvodina region in former Yugoslavia. They immigrated to Hungary in a spur-of-the-moment decision—just with 200 Deutsche Marks in their pockets—in the early 1990s to avoid the bloody wars in Yugoslavia.

Valéria and Laci Hernyák founded their winery in 1993, and their son Tomi now works with them as a winemaker. They initially started their business in Etyek as a distillery, as they had already worked with making palinka back in Yugoslavia. They quickly fell in love with the terroir in Etyek, and got into the winemaking business. Their winery (which is also their home) has steadily grown over the years, and they now have 17 hectares of vineyards. They grow Pinot Noir, Zöldveltelini, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay.

Their true love is methode traditionelle sparkling wine, and they are big advocates for the region’s potential in this area. Their lovely estate also includes a greenhouse (where they hold small events), their distillery, and tasting rooms. The Hernyák’s hospitality and love for their region and vineyards comes through clearly in their wines.
