Gál Vineyards & Winery, Kunság Region

This wine is 100 percent Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), which is the most widely planted red grape in Hungary. It’s planted in almost all wine regions, and results in wines of many styles. It’s a great grape for making the kind of crisp and refreshing rosé (such as this one), in the classic rosé style (fruity, yet very dry) that Hungarians love so much. This wine has won numerous gold medals at wine competitions, and is a longtime favorite rosé at our Budapest shop and tasting cellar. It has a beautifully intense pale cherry color, and since no oak was used, all of the bright fruity flavors of the Kékfrankos grapes have been preserved. It has very fruit-forward aromas of ripe strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, cherries, rhubarb, and bananas. This is a well-balanced wine, with some nice complexity, and a medium finish. Grapes were grown on Csepel Island, a large Danube island south of Budapest (and also partially within the Budapest boundaries), where grapes have been growing for centuries. Grapes were harvested on the early side to preserve acidity, and a bit of the natural carbon dioxide created during fermentation was preserved to give a bit of an extra kick, as well as freshness and a bright acidity. Its medium body makes this wine perfect to drink with grilled fish (particularly salmon), duck, or grilled vegetables. Or you could do as Hungarians love to do, and add a bit of soda water to turn this rosé into a wine spritzer (fröccs).
